This concerto festival annually provides young, talented instrumentalists between the ages of 6 and 23 with an opportunity to perform as soloists with a professional symphony orchestra.
A total of 39 young instrumentalists attended auditions this year. The fourteen candidates who were chosen to perform this year were: Olivia Scholtz (aged15, Piccolo), Caleb Arendse (12, Violin, Samuel Kellner (11, fluit), Carina Naudé (14, Violin), Gretha Maritz (23, Flute), Kirsten Marquardt (22, Flute), Colette du Toit (17, Piano), Daniël Spies (12, Flute), Anni Chang (8, Violin), So Jung La (20, Clarinet), Willie Naudé (16, Cello), Clara Lubbe (15, Saxophone), Louis Nel (17, Piano).
The programme consists of 13 excerpts from instrumental concertos by Vivaldi, Mozart, Saint-Saëns, Von Weber, Bach, Sarasate, Mercadante and Prokofiev and other composers. Besides the movements from concertos, Scaramouche for saxophone and orchestra (Milhaud) and the Suite de Trois for Flute and Orchestra (Godard) are included in the programme.
This is the ideal opportunity for music lovers who enjoy seeing how young prodigies hold their own in the musical drama of soloist versus a full orchestra. Performing in a concerto demands virtuosity, full command of your instrument and musical maturity despite your age and last but not least, nerves of steel.
The same programme is repeated during both concerts. With this concert, the GPO presents accessible classical music entertainment for the whole family.
